The Southern Alps tour takes one on a breathtaking loop through some of the world’s finest scenery. Walk on a glacier in a temperate rainforest, ride to Mt. Cook, and stay on a sheep farm. Besides great biking there are some optional extras such as jet boating, rafting, scenic flights and bungee jumping. 16 Nights/17 Days Tour Grade: Medium Hotel Grades: As this destination does not fit into our usual categories 0-5 here is a more concise yet general description peculiar to this tour. "Small country Inns, lodges and hotels chosen for their character, location and comfort." This tour also includes a farm stay where you will meet the people who are the backbone of the country. Distance: 800-1200 km. The average cycling distance is 60-80 Km a day. NZ1S - Itinerary: Day 1: Assemble at the Hong Kong International Airport for our flight to Christchurch via Auckland at 19:00. Flight timing is CX107 departing 21:05 arriving in Auckland the next day at 13:05. Day 2: Arrival at 13:05. After clearing Immigration and Customs in New Zealand we are on to our connecting flight to Christchurch, QF 4145 departing at 15:20. Arrival into Christchurch will be at 16:40. Transferred to our hotel. Meet up with other participants this evening over the evening meal. Trip briefing. Day 3: Bus to Porter’s Pass where an exhilarating descent and gentle climb takes us to Arthur’s Pass (920M). Here we enjoy the atmosphere of an alpine village and walk to the Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall. Approx. 32 Km cycling. Day 4: A fabulous descent of Otira Gorge brings us to the sea and Hokitika. In 1866 Hokitika was the scene of a gold strike but is now renown for greenstone (jade). Recommended cycling distance is 72 Km of 100 total. Day 5: Recommended 82Km. cycling of 139 total on down Western Coast to Franz Josef Glacier located in the Westland National Park. Day 6: A rest from cycling today while our feet hit the glacier. A walk up the valley to the terminal ice and perhaps a scenic flight on the snow. Day 7: A recommended 90 Km ride of 114 total on rolling hill takes us by Fox Glacier and then on through lush rainforest to Lake Moeraki. Here we enjoy the Wilderness Lodge, take a bush walk or canoe on the lake. Day 8: Recommended 81 Km. cycling of 113 total brings us away from the West Coast and on up to Haast Pass, the lowest pass in the Southern Alps and entry into the drier country of Makarora. We overnight in Mt. Aspiring National Park and here we have an option of a jet boat trip up the Wilkin river. Day 9: Today we cycle 67Km. through Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea both famed for Trout fishing. Overnight in Wanaka. Day 10: On to Queenstown cycling approx. 80 Km. We pass by the beautifully restored old gold mining town of Arrowtown. Queenstown is surrounded by the mountains and the spectacular Lake Wakatipu. Day 11: A rest day in Queenstown giving us opportunity to sample some the exciting adventures available such as rafting, jet boating, a day trip to Milford Sound or a bungee jump for the more daring. Day 12: Recommend 80 Km cycling of 177 total through the Otago Tussock country and Lindis pass to McKenzie Country. Day 13: Recommend cycling 65 Km. of 99 total toward Mount Cook. We ride alongside Lake Pukaki to Australasia’s highest mountain at 3,754M. Time to take in the grandeur of the scene with a walk up Hooker Valley. Day 14: Ride to Lake Tekapo, down Burke’s Pass to stay on a sheep farm at Fairlie. Recommend cycling 80Km of 160 total. Day 15: A short 63Km ride through Beautiful valley and then on to the coach to Christchurch for the last 120. A freshen up at the hotel and out to a Farewell Dinner.
