Some say that to appreciate Mongolia, one should travel by horse. However, traveling by bicycle through this land, you can truly experience the vastness and freedom of the Steppes with its living Nomadic culture – and bicycles do not run away at night nor need to eat!

Mongolia - Mt. Terelj National Park / Gobi Desert (M1-Gobi)

On this journey we travel through the heartland of Central Mongolia – Tov Aimag – renown for its hardy Nomadic herders and their herds of livestock. We start in the capital city Ulaanbaatar and head southwards through open rolling steppe, passing by the ruins of the ancient Manshir monastery. On the steppes we will meet many Nomadic families and be invited to visit their gers (yurts). After two days we swing northwards and enter the forested river valleys of the Terelj National Park. Here too we will encounter local herders camped besides the crystal clear waters of the upper Tuul river, which will provide us idyllic campsites and opportunity for swimming and fishing. Our final night in Terelj National park is spent in traditional Mongolian gers.  The journey culminates with a victory circuit of Sukhbaatar Square in honour of Mongolia’s revolutionary heroes (and the new revolutionaries on bike!).   Our next step is to the Gobi Desert, a region famous for wildlife and dinosaur fossils discovered by American scientists in the 1920’s.  We visit fascinating sights in the Gobi including Yolyn Am – Vulture’s Gorge – and the singing dunes of the Khongoriin Els.  We conclude our journey with a performance of traditional Mongolian song and dance by the world-famous Tumen Ekh dance troupe.

Arhangai - Switzerland of Mongolia (M3)

Arhangai is known as the Switzerland of Mongolia, a landscape of mountains, forests, open steppe – dotted with white gers and small lakes.  On this mountain biking adventure we dive pedals first into the Mongolian countryside travelling down back roads that – still to this day – have seen few if any foreigners.  The landscape on the early part of this adventure is undulating open steppe, smooth dirt tracks make for easy riding with plenty of time to stop and meet local herders – who are only too willing to swap a ride on their horse for a bike ride.  After passing through the provincial capital of Tsetserleg we enter Mongolia’s central Khangai Mountain range crossing over into the Orkhon River valley to finish our ride at the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, Karakorum.
