International Cyclists to Asia was conceived in the Fall of 1984 when Tim Obendorf and a small band of adventurers cycled from Hong Kong to Shanghai. The experiences they shared were "once in a lifetime": the simple kindness of the Chinese villagers, the beautiful countryside, the fun of riding side by side with the Chinese, and thousands of other experiences.

In 1986 China shut its doors to foreigners with their own bikes. This came as a hard blow to all cyclist adventurers and prompted Tim to purchase bikes and station them in various cities of China.  In more recent years these "bike import" restrictions have been relaxed and many of our participants now bring their own bike with them.  Nevertheless, we still maintain a fleet in various locations China/Asia wide and as such we have mountain bikes waiting for riders!

Since 1984, we have developed relationships throughout Asia which have resulted in our ability to run tours with you, the adventurer, in mind.  In the past few years we have also added Malaysia, Vietnam, Tibet, Mongolia - and in 2001, New Zealand - to our list of destinations.

The philosophy of our tours has always been one of wanting to learn from the Chinese and other Asian cultures, providing an opportunity to appreciate their culture, history, and lifestyles. Our hope is that you will enjoy a fun-filled, rewarding experience, gaining new insight into the Asian peoples and the great nations they represent.

Tim Obendorf, Director ICA
